Majestic Helps Homeowners Transform Backyards Into Outdoor Havens – Yahoo! News

With a few simple tips from Majestic, homeowners everywhere can create a calm, peaceful place in their own backyard.

Paris, KY (PRWEB) July 01, 2011

Chaise lounge. Piña Colada. Palm Trees. Summer Breeze. No, this isn’t the scene of a tropical island paradise. In fact, this haven could be hiding right behind the neighbor’s sliding glass door. Across the country, Americans are creating outdoor sanctuaries where they can relax, unwind and enjoy the outdoor spaces of their homes, whether solo or with family and friends.

“Outdoor living features continue to gain popularity among homeowners,” said Rob Newcombe, vice president of sales and marketing for Majestic. “People really want to enjoy their homes at night and during the weekends, and they have realized that an underutilized backyard or patio area is a great place to create a calming refuge.”

According to a recent poll of American Society of Landscape Architects members, some of the most popular outdoor living features for this year include exterior lighting, fire pits/fireplaces, seating/dining areas, grills, installed seating, weatherized outdoor furniture and counter space.* By investing in a few additions to the backyard, homeowners can create an oasis of calm just steps from the back door:

Upgrade the deck: When you’re trying to relax and unwind, the last thing you want to do is look at a faded, crumbling deck. Say goodbye to your deck that needs sanding, staining and cleaning ever year. Invest in wood-alternative decking such as Trex Transcend® that looks great, lasts for decades and doesn’t need to be maintained year after year. With hues such as Lava Rock and Spiced Rum, you’ll feel like you’re in a beautiful tropical rainforest with this decking.

Create an outdoor cooking station: Utilize the outdoor space even further by setting up an outdoor mini-kitchen. A complete outdoor grilling station that can cook a full meal will keep everyone’s spirits high and lend to the relaxed feeling of your outdoor living area. Vermont Castings’ new 501 Signature Series five-burner grill offers four different cooking methods from smoking to baking, so you can enjoy pancakes in the morning or a delicious steak for dinner, using only the grill. The grill’s appearance impresses, too –its stainless steel design will resist rust to keep the grilling station looking shiny and new even in harsh weather.

Select comfortable seating: Toss out the folding lawn furniture and invest in pieces that are comfortable and look great. Decide what you will be using your outdoor area for – whether it’s lounging and relaxing, entertaining and eating, or both – and pick furniture to suit your needs. Now, you can find luxurious outdoor sofas with soft cushions or sturdy chaise lounge chairs that are perfect for lounging in or entertaining company. Look for wood-alternative, weatherproof items that can resist the elements and don’t require sanding, staining or painting to remain looking good over time.

Prepare for cool nights: Extend the seasonal life of your outdoor living space by adding in a heat feature that will carry you through the cool summer nights and brisk fall evenings. Outdoor fireplaces can add warmth to your outdoor area and also serve as the focal point of the space. Look for a fireplace that is easy to operate and will withstand the weather, such as the Al Fresco fireplace from Majestic. This gas fireplace ignites without the hassles of building a fire and its stainless steel frame will create a chic look for your outdoor area.

Tips from The Outdoor GreatRoom® Company regarding outdoor burn bans, outdoor fire pit safety, and clean-burning fuel options.

Eagan, MN (PRWEB) September 27, 2011

Extreme heat and dry weather conditions have forced many county officials across the country to impose outdoor burn bans. These bans are placed to protect the environment and prevent destructive fires. They make private wood fire burning illegal or only allowed by permission of the local fire department or local government. Gas fire pits, like those from The Outdoor Greatroom Company, are exempt from many burn bans and provide a way to keep fires burning.

Burning a fire that runs on clean-burning fuel, like natural gas, will not produce the carcinogenic smoke created by a wood-burning fire. This means less impact on the environment, and neighbors won’t complain about smoke floating into their yard. Gas fire pits not only meet requirements for many burn bans, they are also convenient with very little maintenance. No wood to buy, no soot, smoke, or ashes, and no messy clean-up. Clean-burning fuel options include LP, natural gas, denatured alcohol (non-pourable gel fuel), and pellet fuel.

Dan Shimek, President of The Outdoor GreatRoom Company states, “There isn’t a ‘surefire’ way to bypass all burn bans. However, by choosing a UL listed gas fire pit it is possible to have year-round enjoyment of fire, in a way that is both safe and legal. Outdoor GreatRoom products meet the high standards for safety and emissions set by UL, providing them exemption from most bans.”

The stainless steel gas burners units manufactured by The Outdoor GreatRoom Company generate a controlled fire, eliminate sparks, and do not create toxic smoke. State and local codes vary, as does the duration of individual bans. Research local codes online and check with code officials in each affected zone to and determine if UL Listed gas fire pit tables are a viable option.

From small urban balconies to shared campsites, UL listed gas fire pit burners make it easier than ever to rekindle the warm glow of a fire year-round. The Outdoor GreatRoom® Company is a leading manufacturer of gas fire pit tables, offering a full line of products for outdoor living spaces. All OGC fire pit burner units are UL listed. This ensures that the unit that has been tested to properly ignite and burn cleanly and safely with natural gas or LP.

Top 5 reasons to choose a gas fire pit table:

   1. Safety & Peace of Mind. UL listed products are tested for safe use.

   2. Eliminate Smoke that carries toxic particles and irritates neighbors.

   3. Convenience. No hauling wood, no messy clean-up.

   4. Quick to Start. Electronic ignition starts the fire.

   5. Style and design. Pre-fabricated or DIY custom surrounds.

Top things to consider when buying a gas fire pit table :

     1. UL listed burners ensure safety testing and approval.

     2. Stainless steel burners and components won’t rust.

     3. Electronic ignition. Makes starting the fire simple and safe.

     4. Remote control options offer convenience.

     5. Natural Gas. If using NG, consult with a professional before making your purchase.

     6. Attractive Propane Tank Covers. If using LP (liquid propane) gas, see if the fire pit table has the provision to house a tank underneath. If not, shop for an attractive tank cover that matches your space. Most fire pits use a 20lb propane tank – the same type used for gas barbeque grills.

When homeowners are searching for the perfect residence for their families, many look at the living room area. A fireplace can completely transform a living room. This particular area of a home usually has a center or even a corner fireplace. The living room is not the only place in the house to have a fireplace; some people have fireplaces in the family room, kitchen, the bedroom and even Outdoor Fireplaces.

By having the proper fireplace parts, a truly desirable experience will await you when you use it. Now one must realize a corner fireplace is always place in the corner of the room. The fireplace is usually in a self contained box that is designed to fit in any corner of a room. This fireplace can heat or just simply add a style to your living room area. Electric fireplaces are a good option when considering the amount of work that one wants to put into it.

There are lots of manufactures that design fireplaces and the appropriate fireplace parts. As a homeowner you may select from a variety of corner fireplaces to fit the décor of your home. For example, if you are lacking wall space in your room, then a corner fireplace is for you. Many doorways along with windows leave no space for a fireplace. If there is a corner fireplace in your room, make sure to place your furniture towards the fireplace. This will be the center of your family room, whenever you invite guest. Some designers recommend that you install your corner fireplace in a bedroom or even a dining area.

Whether you decide to install your fireplace, don’t forget to have the proper equipment and fireplace parts. Websites such as ibuyfireplaceparts.com offer a healthy selection of fireplace parts.

A classic 70’s tune gives us the lyrics, “She ran calling ‘Wildfire҅..” Then a love song, but today, possibly the beginnings of an action / adventure / horror movie. With rainfall low, and temperatures and winds high, the wildfires we’re currently battling across the country are heavily taxing our first responder assets. More fires will surely follow if these conditions continue.

First responder assets aside, these fires have affected local civilians. Thousands have evacuated, and many find nothing but charred vacant lots when they return. What are some innovative ways civilians can protect themselves, their property, and actually help firefighters in the process?

At the household level, most of us have smoke detectors. That’s good, because in a house fire, as in a wildfire, where there’s smoke, there’s F.L.A.M.E.:

Family – Something as massive as a wildfire will affect your whole family. Prepare them now.

Landscaping – Simple and subtle steps can make your property much more fire resistant.

Awareness – In an emergency, time is crucial. Stay aware of the threat and get the warnings early.

Moisture – Some say you fight fire with fire. We say you fight fire with water.

Evacuation – Even after taking all the other steps, a wildfire is something best avoided.

Family

A prepared and involved family is far more able to handle any type of disaster than those who wait for last-minute instruction. Therefore, one of the best things you can do for your family is to prepare them for one of the most common and least forgiving enemies; fire.

1. Take the family on a fire-safety tour through the house. Locate dangers such as overloaded electrical outlets and safety items such as extinguishers and escape routes.

2. In emergencies, redundancy is our friend. You should have more than one smoke detector, fire extinguisher, and escape route from rooms or the house. Hint: If you’re a heavy sleeper, buy a “baby monitor.” Put the transmitter near the farthest smoke detector and the receiver in your bedroom.

3. Make sure everyone in the family knows how to use a fire extinguisher, and how to call 911.

4. Have regular fire drills. Let each family member have a turn being the one who discovers the fire and who has to warn others. On at least every other drill, have everyone evacuate blind-folded on their hands and knees (while exercising due safety) to mimic the realistic conditions of a fire evacuation.

5. Revisit every family emergency plan with the whole family during wildfire season and certainly if one is in your area and possibly heading your way.

Landscaping

Though tragedies usually take the lead in newscasts, stories still abound of how some homeowners managed to protect their properties from wildfire by simple and subtle changes with their landscaping and home. Take these steps now, since in a fire, time is of the essence.

1. Your main landscaping consideration is to remove any dead, dry vegetation, whether on the ground or in your trees, that could transfer fire to your house. Since this aspect of wildfire preparedness has been adequately covered by others, here are a few good outside sources:

- General wildfire landscaping tips: http://www.firewise.org/resources/files/wildfr2.pdf

- Florida wildfire landscaping pointers: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/FR/FR07600.pdf

- More on landscaping during wildfire season: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/FR/FR04700.pdf

- Fire-resistant plants: http://web1.msue.msu.edu/emergency/pubs/wildfire_resistant.pdf

2. Be ready to seal your house before evacuating. Create covers for any opening on your home such as attic vents (roof turbines can be covered with metal trash cans), crawlspace openings, etc. Gather your material (such as plywood) and cut, paint, and label (where it goes) each cover now, keeping them stored on your property for immediate use. Put a couple of hooks over each opening you might cover and drill corresponding holes in the plywood covers. The hooks will hold the cover in place while you drill in the screws. This allows one person to do the job and frees up others to perform other necessary tasks. Hint: Also make covers for your windows (including garage door windows) just as if you lived in a hurricane zone.

3. Create a “fire tool box” and include everything needed to prep your house in advance of a wildfire. Store extra garden hoses, water sprinklers, “Y” connectors for extra hoses, wrenches to turn off your gas, rolls of heavy-duty aluminum foil (to cover the openings you didn’t make covers for), machetes and gloves for last minute brush clearing, etc. Store extra tools because you won’t have time to replace tools that might have been broken or lost.

4. Make sure first responders can see your home’s address. Put your house number on your mailbox, near your front door, and painted on the curb by your driveway.

Awareness

A common theme in all our publications and presentations is the fact that in an emergency, our most crucial asset is time (see our other articles at http://www.disasterprep101.com). The two key elements of time in a wildfire are one, to have as much done in advance as possible, and two, get as early a warning as possible.

1. Don’t wait for a wildfire to approach to start your landscaping. Perform that now and keep your property as fire-retardant as you can.

2. Don’t wait for the smell of smoke to warn you a fire is on its way. If fire conditions are right, monitor news channels and listen for community warnings.

3. Learn to recognize your community warnings. Does your community have a reverse 911 system? Sirens? Will the local TV or radio station broadcast the alert? If your community doesn’t have any of these systems, why not start them in your neighborhood? At the very least, have a phone tree.

4. Buy an NOAA Weather Alert Radio since they’re being incorporated into the overall Emergency Alert System. You should also know who your local Ham Radio operators are. See http://www.arrl.org

Moisture

Water is the king of firefighting and fire suppression substances. The best protection for your property lies in your ability to keep a “dome” of moisture in one form or another all over and around your home.

1. One publication under “landscaping” above lists beneficial plants that hold their moisture well. Regardless of the types of plant life in your yard, keep them well hydrated (while following watering ordinances).

2. When setting up your sprinklers, give your yard adequate spray coverage, especially over areas that might worsen the fire such as an above-ground propane tank or wooden deck attached to your house. The best sprinkler for surface areas is the professional directional type rather than the small garden variety that only sprays a weak pattern over a small area. Your garden store rep can help.

3. Put sprinklers on your roof, being sure to anchor them in place since the high winds generated in some wildfire wind storms can blow them off the roof.

4. If you have an in-ground sprinkler system, great! It will give you even water coverage over the grounds and provide a good foundation for the comprehensive water system you’ll need. To your in-ground system add separate “fire” lines that feed water to sprinklers that either spray directly against your house, or outward from your yard to cover vegetation surrounding your property. Too, have a sprinkler line permanently installed on your roof to save you the time of manually putting sprinklers up there. Also, install an additional input valve to allow water from a secondary source like a water pump drawing from your swimming pool.

5. If you have a pool, pond, well, or creek, you have a reservoir that should be put to good use so you don’t draw off the municipal water firefighters need to prevent fire from nearing your property in the first place. It’s a simple matter to keep a gas-powered generator (which self-reliant families should have) and a water pump (such as a pressure-washer), and use the two to draw water from your pool and feed it to your sprinklers. If you have a well with an electric pump, hook your generator to the pump to keep it running should local power fail. Exercise caution when setting up your generator so it doesn’t start its own fire.

6. A final consideration with sprinklers is position. Cover the outer perimeter of your yard, spray against the outer walls and roof of your house, and cover the crowns of your trees if possible. Also, consider outward-pointing sprinklers anchored to an elevated position such as an upper floor deck or porch, or your roof.

Evacuation

We strongly recommend evacuation, even if you’ve taken all the above steps and feel they might work. It’s best that you be pre-prepped and ready to leave at a moment’s notice since time is our most valuable asset. The more ready you are in advance, the more time you have.

1. All your landscaping steps should be taken care of now and maintained, especially during fire season.

2. In wildfire-prone areas, and especially during wildfire season, keep your bugout kits and vehicle ready at all times (with fuel tanks topped off). Hint: With your documents, keep the non-emergency numbers for local authorities so you can call to find out when it’s safe to return.

3. Perform last-minute landscaping ONLY if time allows, since you’ll want extra time to perform the household shutdown steps. However, don’t do anything until you’ve loaded your car with provisions and have nothing left to load but people and pets (in their carriers and/or ready to go).

4. Inside the house do the following:

- Move all flammables (such as furniture and curtains) away from windows making sure each is closed and latched. Lower and close any metallic blinds.

- Leave your fireplace damper open, and close the fireplace protective cover.

- Close all interior doors but don’t lock them.

- Turn off your heat/AC system, and cover any window air-conditioners or floor heater vents with aluminum foil and duct tape inside and out.

- Turn off all gas coming into the house whether from underground line or above-ground tank.

- Turn on inside and outside lights so your property is visible in heavy smoke. Firefighters may need to use it as a beacon.

5.To protect the valuables you don’t have room for in your evacuation vehicle, consider these:

- For waterproof valuables, put them in a bathtub, storage tub, or trashcan you’ve filled with water. (Notice we didn’t recommend your pool, since you should be using it to feed your sprinklers.)

- Large valuables such as antique furniture, etc. should be carried into the center of the house on the lowest floor (the same place you’d go in a tornado).

- Major appliances, such as your oven, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, clothes washer, and dryer, tend not to be consumed by flame or crushed by debris and thereby offer a protected storage location for other valuables. Hint: Disposable diapers are surprisingly flame resistant, and might be useful as wraps for some items stored in an appliance.

6.Lock up the house, leave a note on the door telling authorities you’ve evacuated, check with neighbors to make sure they’re on their way to safety, hop in your vehicle, and leave. Hint: If the area is getting smoky, listen to your radio for road closure information, turn your headlights on low, and set your climate controls to “re-circulate” so as not to draw in smoke from outside the vehicle.

Naturally, this is an article that could go for a few dozen more pages since it’s such an important topic and certainly one where we could offer extensive detail. For now, this will have to do. Will the above information make you fireproof and prevent any damage to your property? No. But it’s very likely to help, especially if you take these steps now. Taking these measures also helps firefighters since any time a wildfire is delayed or a home protected, you take one more item off the shoulders of first responders. Prep now, stay safe, and remember that preparedness is not only a social responsibility; it’s your only true protection.

Electric stove fires offer all the warmth, charm and cosiness of wood fires along with some great benefits. These stylish and efficient appliances create a focal point for your living room without any of the hassle of installation and fuss of operation that other fuels demand. Here's your guide to getting the best electric stove for your needs.

If you appreciate convenience, you'll love electric stove fires as they're freestanding and don't require installation. Suitable for use as standalone units or within a surround, just plug them into an available electrical socket and they're ready to go. You can move your stove around easily within your home and take it with you if you move. Unlike a bulky space heater, an electric stove fire will look beautiful wherever you put it in your house. Perfect if you're living in rented or temporary accommodation.

Another huge plus is that you don't need a chimney. So if you live in a home that can't have a chimney installed, an electric fire is your best choice. An example here would be if you lived in an apartment or if you lived in a rented house where you weren't allowed to make structural changes to the building. However, you might like to add a dummy flue for appearances and get all the ambiance of a roaring wood fire without any of the fuss or mess. What's even better is that not having a chimney results in efficiency as heat is not lost up the flue.

Another big plus is the ease and convenience of use and maintenance. If you want a warm cosy house without the fuss and bother of having to add fuel, empty ashes and frequently monitor your fire, an electric stove is for you.

Operating your electric stove fire is a snap. You control everything by accessing buttons on a control panel which you can conceal for appearances. Just set your thermostatic controls to give your chosen temperature. Or you could use an infrared touch sensitive remote control pad to allow you to adjust the temperature and other settings from the comfort of your sofa or easy chair.

And on autumn nights you can set your electric fire to just give a flame effect without producing any heat. Perfect for creating a cosy ambiance and focal point when the nights are drawing in but it's not yet time to turn on the heating.

Other than convenience, electric stove fires bring a delightful sense of style to your home. Modern electric stoves are produced using traditional materials such as cast iron and with classic or modern styles but use CAD to maximize form and efficiency.

Owing to the heaviness of cast iron, these stoves heat up slowly and give off heat of an even temperature. They are the most controllable. Steel stoves heat up quickly which is great if you want to warm up a room fast. Plus steel is more elastic that casts iron which makes it more durable and damage resistant. A nice option is to get one made from stainless steel with cast iron effect.

Most stoves contain hand-painted logs and an imitation heat bed to create the feeling of having a real fire. You can adjust this log flame motion effect to your liking.

When it comes to buying an electric stove fire, you should consider the size and heating output necessary to heat your room. Most fires feature outputs of 1-2 kilowatts. As a rough guide, multiply the room's length (in metres) by the width and the height. If you then divide this figure by 14, you will get the kW required to comfortably heat your room. (Add 1kW to the total for every single glazed window and take away 1kW for every radiator in the room).

You shouldn't buy a stove with an output too high for your size of room as you'd have to run your heater at a low output resulting in lowered efficiency.

Next you'll need to consider the style of stove you want. It has to be appropriate for your existing decor. Most electric stoves are black which means they can fit into any colour scheme.

The best way to get an overall view of the wide range of electric stove fires available is to visit the web sites of online dealers and browse their illustrated catalogues. You can choose the style you like and get full details including prices and delivery times. Most dealers offer free delivery to a UK address for orders over a certain amount.

Woodbridge Fireplace Inc., an Ontario fireplace manufacturer and retailer of the finest gas fireplaces available for home installation and commercial applications, announces that they now carry the new direct vent gas fireplace model DV48 by Spark Modern Fires, which is currently on display at their large state of the art fireplace showroom in Brampton, Ontario.

Brampton, Ontario (PRWEB) June 21, 2011

Woodbridge Fireplace Inc. (http://www.woodbridgefp.com), an Ontario fireplace manufacturer and retailer of the finest brands of gas fireplaces, electric fireplaces, and fireplace accessories for the home and commercial installation, is pleased to announce that they now carry the DV48 direct vent gas fireplace by Spark Modern Fires. This stunning new contemporary gas fireplace model is currently on display at Woodbridge Fireplace’s modern 6,000 square foot fireplace showroom, located near the intersection of Steeles Avenue East and Dixie Road in Brampton, Ontario. “We are extremely pleased to add the DV48 by Spark Modern Fires to our inventory of fine fireplaces and fireplace accessories. It really is a remarkable new product that offers unlimited design opportunities and is suitable for many applications,” explains Tony James, founder of Woodbridge Fireplace Inc.

Lauded by designers as a modern fireplace with “perfected proportions,” the DV48 by Spark Modern Fires was introduced in response to requests for a sleek and modern direct vent fire ribbon that was sized somewhere between currently available models that measured 36 inches and 72 inches. The DV48, measuring 48 inches wide by 12 inches tall, is designed for a broad range of architectural applications. Available for gas or propane hook up, its narrow linear shape and high ratio of flame draws the eye like a magnet, creating a stunning focal point for any room. The ceramic non-reflective glass is set back from the black border to provide a clean and uncluttered appearance. Like all of Spark’s direct vent fireplace models, the DV48 provides top of the line safety features and high heating efficiency, as well as the latest in environmentally friendly technology. To customize this contemporary fireplace and add a unique personal touch, different types of media, such as stones, small river rocks and fire glass, can used in the bed surrounding the burner.

“The refined and narrow 48 inch dimension of the Spark DV48 achieves perfect geometry. Optimally proportioned, its clean and uncluttered lines flawlessly frame the pure ribbon of fire. This fireplace is not only beautiful, it is extremely efficient, operating at an impressive 80 percent efficiency rate, because air is drawn from the outside, preventing drafts and heat loss. Customers can finish the Spark DV48 with the surround of their choice, custom fit to enhance any environment. We invite everyone to our showroom to see firsthand this functional work of art,” says Tony.

Wholesale Furniture Brokers is introducing 13 wall mounted fireplaces by Dynasty Fireplaces on its US and Canadian online stores. “These modern fireplaces provide the ambiance and warmth of gas or wood fireplaces with the convenience and safety of electricity. You can even have the fire without the heat!”

Seattle, Washington (PRWEB) September 30, 2011

Wholesale Furniture Brokers has added 13 fireplaces by Dynasty Fireplaces to its US and Canadian online stores. “The electric fireplaces by Dynasty Fireplaces are made to easily mount on a wall in two easy steps, ship in 1 to 2 business days, and can be controlled with a remote,” says Matt Holmes, Wholesale Furniture Brokers’ Marketing Manager. “They’re perfect for adding a dramatic and dynamic look to your wall and can keep you warm when it gets cold.”

The fireplaces produce 750 watt / 2500 btu on low heat and 1500 watt / 5000 btu on high heat. They are designed with a fan that pushes air out instead of radiating the heat. This design is more efficient than a base board heater since it can spread heat quicker and further. The electric flame operates with or without heat. Online shoppers can choose a fireplace with crystal black glass or a variety of stone frame options.

Installation instructions are provided and require marking a wall where the fireplace will be installed and drilling holes to screw in a support plate. Two people may be required to lift the fireplace and lock it on the plate. Once installed, the fireplace can be plugged into a regular electrical outlet or wired into the wall to hide the cord.

The remote can control the power, heat, flame effect, and fan speed along with the manual controls on the unit. “Everyone that’s bought a Dynasty Fireplace loves the design, realistic flame, and the option of heat,” says Dufour when asked how customers have responded to the fireplaces. “It’s a great option for the consumer because the product doesn’t need to be vented like a gas or wood fireplace, saving installation and construction costs.”

Dynasty Fireplaces manufacturers its fireplaces in China and then imports them to their warehouses in Richmond, British Columbia, and Kent, Washington. Products are inspected by a quality control team at the manufacturing facility before being shipped to North America.

The fireplaces are shipped with DHL or Fedex for quick delivery. Dynasty uses thick corrugated cardboard, Styrofoam, and heavy straps for added protection during shipping.

New, cutting edge design styles are currently being developed by Dynasty. “Coming soon, we’ll have a flush mount fireplace product line,” adds Dufour.

“We chose to partner with Wholesale Furniture Brokers because of their ability to reach people through the internet and their business networks. The exposure is huge for our company and adds another quality product for Wholesale Furniture Brokers’ customers to choose from,” states Dufour when asked why Dynasty Fireplaces selected Wholesale Furniture Brokers to retail the fireplaces.

About Dynasty Fireplaces

Dynasty Fireplaces was established in 2006 and started selling fireplaces in 2007. They are committed to raising the innovative bar in the electric fireplace market, excellent customer service, a high quality product line, and stocked quality replacement parts.

Best and worst winter heaters – Today Tonight

Read more about

As temperatures drop across the country and power bills rise, we look at the most efficient and economical forms of staying warm in your home.

Unless you are a ski bunny, it is sometimes hard to think of anything good about winter: it is cold and staying warm can be expensive.

But the cost can come down to your choice of heater.

David Craven from the Office of Sustainability, said there was one obvious way people can save money on heating, while also helping the environment.

“If they do one thing at all, we’d say install insulation in your house,” Mr Craven said.

“It’s a very cost effective way to reduce your heating bill by up to 40 per cent.”

“There are also some simple retrofit things that people can do. Install weather strips around your doors and windows to stop draughts. You’ve got curtains to cover your windows.”

Mr Craven also advised choosing a heater that is most suitable for the space you are trying to heat. But this is not easy, so we employed thermographer David Rice and his thermal camera to show us just what different heaters could do.

“You see the thermal patterns actually coming out of the heaters where the heat is running it might just be going straight,” Mr Rice said.

He looked at five portable heaters, an open fireplace and ducted heating. First was an electrical radiant heater, selling for $60.

“Very inefficient,” Mr Rice said. “You can only feel the heat so far out.”

The thermal image showed all that was really warm was the heater itself.

Next was the Microfurnace, a small blower heater selling for $250. Again, it was going to struggle in a lounge room of any size.

“At this rate it would take a very long time to heat the house up,” Mr Rice said.

David said these two were better served for heating a person as opposed to heating the air and therefore a room.

Our third test used a convection heater, which worked on heating up and causing warm air to rise, creating circulation in the room. It was priced at $265.

But David Rice said these were really only useful in very small rooms, such as the bathroom.

Next was an oil heater, using the principals of the convection radiant and the convection heater, costing $149.

“It’s very warm, the machine itself, but very little heat coming out of it,” Mr Rice said.

Finally, we tested an oil-filled heater with a fan, which cost $299.

“This is the Rolls Royce of these type heaters,” Mr Rice said. “It’s got the fan forced type of heater inside, it’s pushing out heat, it’s starting to move up.”

This was the only heater to really start make an impact on the temperature of the room. But be careful, because these electric heaters can be expensive.

Fireplaces certainly look the nicest, but whether gas or wood, you only had to look at David Rice’s thermal image to see much of your money could be sent up the chimney.

“As you can see the heat is coming out to about here, but the majority is going up the chimney,” Mr Rice said.

In terms of the thermal camera, ducted heating seemed the least spectacular. There were no real hotspots, but in the same time it took the electric heaters to get started, the whole room began to change under ducted heating.

“You can actually see the difference in the temperature in the walls,” Mr Rice said.

“Now everything is heating. We’re up to about 20, 22 [degrees Celsius] and all the studs are starting to show.”

Home owner Jenny Bechart said she had tried all the other options, but there was no other way to go than ducted heating.

The experts agreed: ducted gas was the cheapest heating, costing about 11 cents per hour. If it was not an option, reverse-cycle air conditioning was about 12 cents per hour.

David Coven from the Office of Sustainability said his only other advice was to try only to heat the rooms you need, and keep the temperature constant.

“If it does have a thermostat, keep that between 18 and 20 degrees [Celsius],” Mr Coven said.

Is my electric fireplace safe to use?

My grandfather passed away this summer and I received his Dimplex electric fireplace. I think it is a base model with 2 switches (1 for the flame & 1 for the heat) and a thermostat that clicks once it passes a certain point. Since the temperatures are getting cooler, I decided to use it tonight; however, after plugging it in and turning the heat up a small spark came out at the bottom, and I immediately unplugged it. I was wondering anyone knows what may cause this problem (needing cleaned or if something was bumped during the travel to my house) and if it is safe to use. Thanks for you help!!!
